Marcia Butler has enjoyed successful careers in music and interior design. Now a published author, she is excited to share her process with others at HippoCamp in her breakout session called, “The Real Writing Life: Stop Procrastinating Now.” We’re excited to hear her speak! In the meantime, we asked her a few questions about her upcoming participation in our writing conference.

Marcia Butler

HM: What are you most excited to share during your session?

MB: We will explore why it is that can we perform our “day jobs” with passion and dedication for many hours every day, and yet have trouble sitting down for our “real” work: writing. The answer is simple, complex and, of course, very deep. What is “block”? Waiting for inspiration? Debunk these confusing misconceptions. Understand the mindset of procrastination and what is gained from it. Dissect what does work in your daily life; harness that and transpose this success onto your writing practice. This session will explore resistance and help you develop discipline, through a prism of creativity. Be prepared to walk away with renewed dedication to your art!

Why do you love true stories?

The art form of personal essay and memoir is a writer’s reality, stripped bare of pretense and secrets. When we share our stories, we are truly revealed, not only to friends, family and the world, but also to ourselves in the process.

Share a fun fact with us—something attendees may be surprised to know:

This is a “secret”, but I have been watching DVDs of the 1980s TV show “Dallas” every single day for the last eight years. Discuss.

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

Aside from my memoir, The Skin Above My Knee – published in 2017, I have a debut novel releasing in April 2019 called Pickle’s Progress. I continue to write personal essays, which will always be my sweet spot. Because I’ve been involved in three creative careers, I’m making a documentary film called The Creative Imperative. Stay tuned!!

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

Meeting tons of writers, listening to tons of lectures and panels and getting tons of inspiration from my colleagues! Community is needed in the solitary work we all do.

Marcia, thanks for sharing more about your session! We should chat about “Dallas” when you get here—no spoilers, though, please! See you at the conference!
