In today’s world, there are more ways than we can count to get information; but how do we know what is true and not true? That question is an important one for all creative nonfiction writers.

A story that approaches everything from every perspective is so intricately put together that the reader gets sucked in without even knowing it happened. An interview that gets every juicy detail from the source is like a pot of gold for a writer. Those are the kinds tools we want to arm you with for you own writing at HippoCamp: A Conference for Creative Nonfiction Writers.

And here are a few main conference sessions to get you started:

THE ART OF INTERVIEWING: DEEP DIVES FOR THE TELLING DETAILS with M. Diane McCormick

In this session, McCormick will harness the lifetime of skills she’s gained in the journalism and freelance world.  She’ll give you tips on how to dig without being overbearing, and tell you three specific questions that you should ask at every interview.

JUST THE FACTS, MA’AM: RESEARCH IN THE ERA OF CATFISH, RUSSIANS AND FAKE NEWS with Dawn Zera

The internet can seem like a black hole of information, but allow Zera to show you all her tricks on how to get legitimate information without having to sift.  Beyond that, she’ll even give you ways to decipher whether or not a source is bias to something or someone.

CALL THE DOC: HOW DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING CAN HELP CREATIVE WRITING with Alexander Monelli

Monelli is going switch things up a little and dive into film, because what better inspiration than a factual movie?  Not only can it inspire you to deepen and/or expand characters in a certain way; it can also give you ideas on what kind of information to look for in interviews.

If you’re enticed, please check out our website for more information on the conference, or head straight to registration!
