Jessie van Eerden learned about HippoCamp through recommendations from her MFA students and decided to check it out for herself! She will be participating in A Night of Nonfiction: Debut CNF Author Readings & Discussion, and we’re excited to hear her read and speak! In the meantime, we asked her a few questions about her upcoming participation in our writing conference.

Jessie van Eerden

HM: What are you most excited to share during your panel?

JVE: I’m excited to share from my new collection of portrait essays and to hear from the other readers.

Why do you love true stories?

I love the flexibility of form in telling true stories—we have freedom, as non-fictionists, to use genre hybridity and all kinds of formats to explore the intersection of our personal stories with the larger human story. I love the process.

Share a fun fact with us—something attendees may be surprised to know:

I have a desire to learn to play clawhammer banjo!

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

You can find my essay, “What I Want Your Voice to Do” in the May 2018 Issue (v17n1) of Blackbird and my essay “Blessed Is the Impossible Heart” in the Spring 2018 Issue of Arts & Letters. This summer, I’ll be working on my third novel.

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

I’m mainly looking forward to meeting the other writers and enjoying the community.

Jessie, thanks for sharing more about your session! See you at the conference!
