Jodi Sh. Doff is a returning attendee and a first-time HippoCamp presenter. In her flash session, The Virtual Writers Room: Better Writing Through Technology, she’s going to share lots of tips and tricks on how we can be more efficient by using some no- or low-cost tools! To get us ready for this year’s event, we asked Jodi a few questions about her return to Lancaster.

HM: Tell us a little about your involvement in HippoCamp this year. What are you most excited to share during your panel?

JSD: You’ll get seven minutes of free (and paid) writing software and text editors, timers for manageable workflow, internet distraction blockers, and some things to block IRL distractions from the internal critic to the outside world. You’ll leave with a list of things to try that fit your writing style and schedule.

Why do you love true stories?

True stories ground me, they make me feel more part of a larger world. I started writing when I wasn’t seeing my own experience reflected anywhere, and I knew my experiences couldn’t be as unique as they felt. The more I read of others, the more I understand about myself.

What made you decide to participate in HippoCamp this year as a speaker?

This is my third HippoCamp, and my first as a speaker. I’ve come home with so many ideas and insights from previous flash session – the unique open sharing of information, techniques, and insights from guests and participants is part of what makes the conference so great. I wanted to be even more of a part of the Hippocampus experience, each year I’ve taken on something new, and I’m at my best in front of a crowd so I’m looking forward to joining the illustrious ranks of those who have come before me.

Attendees can learn more about you on our speaker’s page, of course, but there’s more to you than that 50-word bio! Share a fun fact with us, something we may be surprised to know.

As a kid, I wanted to be a mermaid (I know, mermaids and unicorns, so over them!) and when I learned to swim, I learned to swim with my legs together, like a dolphin (or mermaid) so I wouldn’t tear my tail when it finally grew in. To this day, I find it really difficult to swim any other way.

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

This has been a challenging year as a caretaker for my aging mom, but I’m looking forward to resurrecting a video series I’d started called Middle-Aged Lazy.

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

I’m looking forward to seeing friends I’ve made in past years (and friendships that have grown since then) and introducing a pal to the conference for the first time. I’d love if we went to different workshops so we can compare notes later and I won’t have to miss anything.
