Hippocampus Magazine is proud to announce our third featured speaker. We’re delighted to welcome Beth Kephart, author of many titles including the craft book Handing the Truth. Beth will speak during our orientation programming, just before our welcome reception, in a talk about the power of truth.

Following her talk, there will be a Q&A and book-signing, and you’ll have a chance to purchase her books throughout the weekend.

About Beth:

Beth Kephart is the award-winning author of 22 books of memoir and fiction, an award-winning teacher at the University of Pennsylvania, and a co-founder of Juncture Workshops. Her essays and reviews appear in The New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Review, LitHub, The Millions, LARB, Salon.com, Brevity, Creative Nonfiction, Philadelphia Inquirer, and elsewhere. In her books Handling the Truth and Tell the Truth. Make It Matter., she explores and celebrates the empathic truth—where it is found, how it becomes story. Her new book is Wild Blues, a novel built out of the stuff of her life.

Amma Marfo

Amma will close out the conference. After three days of learning and sharing, she’ll leave us inspired and ready to do our best creative work! Following her talk, there will be a Q&A and book-signing, and you’ll have a chance to purchase her book(s) throughout the weekend.

Amma Marfo

Amma Marfo is an education and writing professional who equips her audiences (on paper and in person alike) to understand creativity, their temperament, and the intersection of comedy and our daily lives. She speaks on college and university campuses across the country, at regional and national conferences, and has partnered with organizations like HubSpot, Wayfair, Startup Institute Boston, and General Assembly. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of Rhode Island, and a master of education from the University of South Florida.

Abigail Thomas

Abigail is our Saturday evening keynote, and she will share her wisdom of writing essay and memoir and experimenting with form. Following her talk, there will be a Q&A and book-signing, and you’ll have a chance to purchase her books throughout the weekend.

Abigail Thomas, the daughter of renowned science writer Lewis Thomas (The Lives of a Cell), is the mother of four children and the grandmother of 12. Her academic education stopped when, pregnant with her oldest daughter, she was asked to leave Bryn Mawr during her first year. She’s lived most of her life on Manhattan’s Upper West side, and was for a time a book editor and for another time a book agent. Then she stared writing for publication. Her first three books, Getting Over Tom, An Actual Life, and Herb’s Pajamas were works of fiction. Her memoir, A Three Dog Life was named one of the best books of 2006 by the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. It won the 2006 Inspirational Memoir Award given by Books for A Better Life She is also author of the New York Times bestselling What Comes Next and How to Like It, Safekeeping, a memoir, and Thinking About Memoir. She lives in Woodstock, New York with her dogs.
