We’re can’t wait until this year’s Flash Sessions on Sunday! Among the mix in this fast-paced event will be Kelly Kandra Hughes who will share some writing mistakes she made — so you don’t have to make them as well! This won’t only apply to beginners either, as no matter where we are in our writing life, we’re bound to try something new! To get us ready for this year’s event, we asked Kelly a couple of questions about her upcoming trip to Lancaster.

HM: Tell us a little about your involvement in HippoCamp this year. What are you most excited to share during your flash session?

Attendees can expect to laugh (maybe even cry) at how I jumped off the cliff into the world of writing and only on the way down realized maybe I should have thought about this some more.

Why do you love true stories?

I love true stories because we ALL have them. Doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. Stories connect us by our shared experiences.

What made you decide to participate in HippoCamp this year as a speaker?

Submitting to present at HippoCamp was the “do one thing that makes you afraid” advice I’ve read time and time again on self-help websites. I didn’t know if I had a shot in hell of being accepted, but I didn’t want to not try.

Attendees can learn more about you on our speaker’s page, of course, but there’s more to you than that bio! Share a fun fact with us, something we may be surprised to know.

My husband and I are nomads. After we got married in 2016, we got rid of 99 percent of our belongings. Now, everything we own fits into our car and we travel around the country pursuing what brings us joy.

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

I’ve got some nonfiction picture books and magazine articles for children percolating in my brain. I also update my blog on a regular basis about my practice of living a joyful life: www.genesispotentia.com.

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

Meeting new people! Especially people who love dogs. If you are one of “those dog people,” please come find me and show me pictures of your pup!

We love introducing Lancaster to attendees. Since you have been here before, what would you recommend to other attendees?

I grew up close to Lancaster and attended college in the town over. I highly recommend people check out Hershey, PA. If you want thrills, check out the amusement park. If you want beauty, check out the garden. If you want free, check out Chocolate World and/or the Hotel Hershey.

Kelly, we are so looking forward to sharing our pet pictures with you — and also learning from you. We look forward to seeing you have in Central PA, and we’re SO glad you took a leap of faith to submit a proposal!

And, reader, register to reserve your place today.
