Returning speaker Allison K Williams will present a breakout session, “25 Hours in the Day: Making and Living a Writing Life” and a (sold-out) pre-conference workshop, “Writing Your Memoir Proposal.” She will also moderate our Sunday publishing panel. We’re excited to hear her speak! In the meantime, we asked her a few questions about her upcoming participation in our writing conference.

Allison Williams

HM: What are you most excited to share during your session?

AW: I can’t wait to lead writers through the memoir proposal-writing process! I love generative workshops, and I feel like even if you’re not ready to write the whole memoir yet, planning the proposal can focus your idea and help you position how you want to tell the story and why, and who your ideal reader is going to be. Proposals also help writers honestly assess whether it’s worth it to put the time in to publicize their book (whether indie or traditional publishing) or if it’s going to help to publish a few more essays first.

Why do you love true stories?

I love the power and bravery of owning what happened and sharing it on my own terms.

Share a fun fact with us—something attendees may be surprised to know:

I love traveling, and this year I hit my 50th country, Taiwan! It was beautiful and amazing and now I’m totally into geology–check out Yehliu Geopark online, the rock formations are gorgeous!

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

The Brevity Podcast, and I’m finishing a YA novel and writing a proposal (of course!) for a book on self-editing.

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

Reading the awesome Twitter feed and using funny tweets as an easy way to say hello to other attendees.

We love introducing Lancaster to attendees. What are you looking forward to during your visit?

It’s a great walking town–bring your comfy shoes. And the coffee at Prince Street Cafe is wonderful! I’m usually the person from the farthest away–come say hello and see if you can beat my mileage!

Thanks for sharing more about your session, Allison! See you at the conference!
