Gwen Erkonen is teaming up for a presentation called Professionally Naked: Living a Dual Life with, as she told us, her “dear friend and writing hero Lisa Smith.” The pair will talk about what it’s like to be a memoirist while working in a professional capacity where things like confidentially come into play, such as law or medicine.

HM: Why do you love true stories?

GE: Extraordinary things happen to ordinary people everyday. The telling of those stories is part of all of our truths and helps us understand our families, our co-workers and ourselves a little better.

What made you decide to participate in HippoCamp this year as a speaker? If you’re a returning speaker, how did your past experiences encourage to want to come back?

My amazing friend talked me into it and I can’t say no to Lisa Smith.

Share a fun fact with us—something attendees may be surprised to know:

I have a live music problem and have seen the Grateful Dead more than 100 times. I stopped counting after that.

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

I’m working on my memoir, Baby’s Breath and continuing to post blogs on my website, sugarmagsmd.com.

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

Meeting other writers and hearing their stories.

Thank you, Gwen, for sharing with us at HippoCamp this year!
