Amy Fish is a returning HippoCamp attendee — and a past speaker — and we’re happy to welcome her back to Lancaster! This year, she’s teaming up with Lara Lillibridge for a breakout session called The Humour Makeover: How to Take Your Existing Work and Make it Funny.

We asked her a few questions about her upcoming involvement with HippoCamp!

HM: Tell us a little about your involvement in HippoCamp this year. What are you most excited to share during your panel?

AF: I am running a workshop with Lara Beth Lillibridge (yay). You can expect two things: One, I’ll bring you Canadian candy and, two, we will give you at least six useful craft-focused humour tips.

Why do you love true stories?

Much easier to write about things that actually happened. I can barely get my fictional characters to stop for milk on the way home from work – that’s how challenging I find transitions.

What made you decide to participate in HippoCamp this year as a speaker? If you’re a returning speaker, how did your past experiences encourage to want to come back?

I am doing it for to get the “speaker” ribbon on my name badge. But seriously, I’m HONOURED and THRILLED that our proposal got accepted! My past experiences and the amazing friends I have made keep me coming back every year. I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for HippoCamp.

Share a fun fact with us—something attendees may be surprised to know:

I’m old enough to be a grandmother. Although I’m not actually one, I could be.

Aside from preparing for HippoCamp 2018 (of course!), what are you working on? Any recent or upcoming projects/publications you can share?

Does writing a manuscript and shoving it in a drawer count as an upcoming project? Asking for a friend.

Since you’ll also be attending the conference, what are you most looking forward to learning or doing when you’re not wearing your “speaker hat?”

I will be attending as many sessions as I can in between whoopee pies and the mashed potato bar.

We love introducing Lancaster to attendees. If you live here or have been here before, what would you recommend to other attendees?

I have big plans to hit up the Rainbow Shop on N. Queen for $5 shoes.

Amy, we can’t wait to see what shoes you buy this year. Thank you for sharing and for being part of our community.
