How do you write creatively about drab-seeming, detailed subjects—such as freshwater mussels—to balance fact and appeal?

This session will explore ways to write lively nonfiction about obscure or scientific subjects without compromising accuracy. We’ll examine some tactics to make science writing detailed without being boring, realistic without being too heavy, and compelling without being moralistic. We’ll discuss strategies from other fields of science communication and apply them to writing creative nonfiction.

This session will provide applicable ideas for shaping science writing—and other writing about quiet, complex wonders—into an inviting space for curiosity and empathy.
